New Parents or Guardians

School Dinners - Each day, children at Thwaites School have the option of enjoying a freshly prepared hot meal, a filled jacket potato or a filled baguette, cooked by our in-house caterer. Thwaites School menus are made up of meals chosen by the children and arranged into four seasonal menus that run throughout the course of the year to ensure your child will enjoy the delicious and nutritious food on offer.

School Trips - Thwaites School children enjoy a variety of school trips and visits throughout the school year to enhance their learning experiences and support our bespoke curriculum. With access to our very own minibus, teachers have the freedom to take children to where the learning will be the most vibrant and exciting. Amongst many other experiences, children enjoy using local resources to enhance PE, visit woods, rivers and beaches in our locality, participate in outdoor and adventurous days at Kepplewray in Class One, enjoy overnight residential trips to Low Bank Ground on the shores of Coniston Lake in Class Two and experience a jam-packed three-day stay in our nation's capital, London in Class Three.

Bus - Each day, the Thwaites School minibus picks children up and drops children off at a variety of locations in Haverigg, Millom and the surrounding villages and hamlets. The bus is driven by qualified members of staff and there is always an additional adult on board for the safety of the passengers.

All of the above are paid for using our cashless system, 'School Money', which is available as an app. You will be given a password when your child starts at our school.

Nursery - Our fantastic, newly refurbished nursery welcomes children from the first term after their third birthday. Our nursery children enjoy learning through play as they move around the nursery space, set up with everything they need to meet their early learning goals, through continuous and enhanced provision. Our Early Years' curriculum has been carefully planned to ensure an especially smooth transition from nursery to reception, ensuring your child's start to school is as positive and natural as it can be.

Parents' and Carers' evenings - Each year we host two parents' and carers' evenings. One at the beginning of autumn term to discuss how your child has settled into the new school year and one in the spring term to discuss how well your child is progressing. At the end of each academic year, teachers send home end-of-year reports summarising your child's school year. Teachers are available, once the reports have gone out, to discuss them if a parent or carer wishes.

Homework - Teachers give children homework as and when they feel it is necessary. Therefore, the homework children receive may vary, depending on the time of year or the year group your child is in. Children will be given spellings to learn and are encouraged to practise their times tables each week. It is also very important that your child reads at home. As a school we aim for three times a week, but the more often children read, the more they will develop a love of reading, which in turn will make them better readers, allowing better progress across the entire curriculum.

Wrap-Around Care - Children can attend Morning Club from 8:00 a.m. for only £1. Breakfast is available for children who want it for an additional cost of £1. Children can choose from toast or a selection of cereal and a drink of squash. The school day finishes at 3:10 p.m. 'Stop and Play' after-school club is available until 4:30 p.m. for only £4.
